Access, Belonging, & Culture at North Carolina Outward Bound School

At North Carolina Outward Bound School, we believe in the power of compassionate leadership and inclusive adventure. From our earliest roots, we’ve strived to build learning environments where people from all walks of life feel welcome, valued, and inspired to grow.

A Legacy of Compassion and Courage

Outward Bound’s history is rooted in the belief that challenge and adversity reveal character. Our founder, Kurt Hahn, shaped this vision through his experiences in 1930s Germany, where he spoke out against injustice and fostered a school culture grounded in moral courage and inclusivity. His leadership laid the foundation for our commitment to building compassionate, connected communities—something we still carry forward today.

Our Commitments

Team and Leadership Representation: We are dedicated to building a staff and board that reflect a range of perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds. Through collaboration, transparency, and open dialogue, we foster a culture where all team members feel a sense of belonging, shared purpose, and influence in our decision-making.

Student Experience and Program Design: We strive to ensure our courses are relevant and accessible to more students by examining course formats, pricing, gear access, language, and other potential barriers. Our aim is to expand who sees themselves reflected and welcomed in outdoor learning experiences.

We work to create program environments where each student feels seen and supported, and where differences and life experience are acknowledged and respected. Our instructors are trained to guide compassionate group cultures that nurture belonging and personal growth.

Community and Partnerships: We are proud to collaborate with mission-aligned schools, youth organizations, and community-based programs. These partnerships help us better support students from underrepresented backgrounds and share in the collective work of increasing access to transformative outdoor experiences.

Respect and Non-Discrimination: North Carolina Outward Bound School does not tolerate discrimination or harassment. We are committed to providing an environment where all individuals—regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or other identities—are treated with dignity and respect. We uphold policies that protect individuals' rights and affirm our belief in the inherent worth of all people.
